“Who is the Greatest Mathematician that Ever lived?”

I completely understand that some people will say that there is some subjectivity to this question. However most Mathematicians today agree that Leonhard Euler & Carl Frederich Gauss are the two foremost contenders for that question. Of course, Newton is also ranked in the top 5. However most students—especially in high school—are not able to answer this question.

Why Does The Question Matter?

When you join a soccer team and your goal is to play as a striker or forward or if you join a basketball team and you are to play the point guard position, it would not make sense if you knew nothing about the best in those fields.

Knowing the best is can help you aspire to be like them. Just like soccer players might want to be like Messi or basketball players might want to be like Stephen Curry, Math students should want to be like the best.

Who is Leonhard Euler & who is Carl Frederich Gauss?

Leonard Euler was born in 1707 in Basel Switzerland. The son of a clergyman. Euler was a Pioneer in Mathematics & Physics.

He made groundbreaking contributions to various fields, including calculus, number theory, and topology. Euler's work had a profound impact on the development of modern mathematics and physics.

*Key Contributions:*

1. *Calculus*: Euler developed the theory of calculus, introducing concepts such as the Euler-Lagrange equation and the Euler method for solving differential equations.

2. *Number Theory*: Euler made significant contributions to number theory, including the development of the Euler's totient function and the Euler-Mascheroni constant.

3. *Topology*: Euler's work on topology led to the development of the Euler characteristic, which is a fundamental concept in the field.

*Legacy:*

Euler's work has had a lasting impact on mathematics and physics. He is considered one of the most prolific mathematicians of all time, with over 900 publications to his name. Euler's contributions continue to influence research in mathematics, physics, and engineering.

*Interesting Fact:*

Euler lost his sight in both eyes due to cataracts and other eye problems, but he continued to work on mathematics, relying on his assistants to read and write for him. He was able to still publish 50 papers in 1 year as a blind mathematician.
